Paul Messis - The Blind Leading The Blind b/w As Time Rolls By MSR-10

Paul Messis has been releasing music since 2008, he's a well established figure on the underground music scene, this is his sixth solo 45.

Blind Leading The Blind b/w As Time Rolls By, continues in the 60s garage vein Messis is known for.

The top-side 'The Blind Leading the Blind' is a jangle led protest song about the state of the world at the moment, the hypocrisy of the media, the self-consumption of the modern age. Musically sounding as though it belong in Los Angeles 1965, the song follows a typical folk-rock chord progression, whilst Messis delivers his angst ridden poetry, expressing his own mis-trust of the established figures which rule society. 12 String guitar plays a prominent part, jangling throughout, with a Jazz inspired guitar solo in the middle and fuzz tone guitar penetrating through the compression.

'As Time Rolls By' the b-side, continues the 12 string lament Messis is known for, the track is a Dovers-esque downtrodden pop song, Messis portraying his alienation from the world with further  lyricism about inner confusion and melancholy, Messis' understated vocal styling adding to the naivety and charm of the track.

Worthless - Children Of The Grave b/w Softest MSR-09

Market Square are proud to be releasing a new 45 by Brooklyn based psych-heads Worthless.

Children on The Grave b/w Softest is a two-sided acid psych freakout of mind-altering pop proportions.

Formed in 2012 by psych whizz kid  Curtis Godino, Worthless who are natives of Florida headed north and made their home-destination Brooklyn NY, once they arrived in the big city,  the group formed and begun its manifesto of making brain-changing psychedelic music.

The group have very similar connotations to 60s  anti-establishment acid-punk band The Fugs (also from New York), they share the Fugs' DIY assault of the senses, whilst recording the music themselves and also releasing their own music, having released their debut LP on their own label earlier in the year.

Worthless are the ideal group for Market Square and we are super pleased to be releasing like-minded folks and sharing their music worldwide.

This their second 7" see's the band develop a pop sensibility entwined within the psychedelic weirdness they create with their tape-echos, delays and Vox 12 string guitars.


The top-side Children of The Grave, sets out with a reverb heavy vocal, sounding reminiscent to 60s Milwaukee psych group The Baroques, the song walks along with a trippy feel further heightened by the use of acoustic guitar and odd sounding sound-effects at times sounding quite similar to early Pink Floyd demo 'Scream Thy Last Scream', gloriously lo-fi in its recording, this will be the soundtrack for anyone who enjoys original psych.

The B-side 'Softest' is an organ led piece of psych mastery, the song has a Jane and Serge vibe about it, the warped yéyé pop of Worthless evolving through layers of echo and feedback, plus genius use of slowing and speeding the tape to effect the vocals, the song then slides to its finalé a slow early Floyd Farfisa Compact solo, this instrumental segment recalls imagery of San Francisco's live venue The Fillmore filled with psychedelic light shows and oil lamp projectors, you could well be placed on Haight and Ashbury circa 1966 than modern-day Brooklyn 2015.

The Belltowers - Here To Stay b/w Lovin' You (Leading Me On) MSR-08

Florida based folk-rock group The Belltowers have been going since 2006, Market Square are proud to be releasing their second 45rpm single and the labels eighth release.

Here To Stay b/w Lovin' You (Leading Me On) hears The Belltowers continuing in their Byrdsian take-over, following on from their debut 45 on Hidden Volume Records, The Belltowers continue with their high quality twelve-string janglers and Paisley-Underground inspired folk-rock.

The Band consist of ex-Lears frontman Paul Mutchler - Vocals & 12 String Guitars, Eddie Foeller - Guitars, Mandolin and Harp, Marshall Huggins - Bass and Keys and Thomas Miller - Drums & Percussion.


'Here To Stay' the A-side, hits with perfect paisley pop stylings, recounting early 80s bands such as The Rain Parade and The Three O'Clock, the song ebbs and weaves, with continuous Rickenbacker jangle, harmonies and an underlying Hammond organ swirling gently beneath, the break has an interesting backwards guitar solo and overall shows a great level on musicianship and songwriting skills from The Belltowers.

The B-side 'Lovin' Me'  is a short and sweet jangler, Mutchler sounding more like Roger McGuinn than McGuinn himself, the track also has a sort of Long Ryders country-rock feel to it also, great drum fills permeate the scene whilst the compressed treble-tone action of the Rickenbacker 12 string guitar chimes through.

The Belltowers like countless other groups in America right now are recording and writing great music, Market Square Records are pleased to be releasing the likes of these groups in Europe and giving them a chance to have their music on the great format of 45rpm 7" wax.

The Ar-kaics - Always The Same b/w Let Me In MSR-07

The Ar-kaics blasted into the world in 2013 releasing their debut 45 on Speakertree Records, since then the band has gathered momentum with continuous live shows across North America and a handful of really hip 45s on various labels and the release of their cool self-titled debut LP released on Windian in 2014.

2015 sees the label release the bands fifth 45rpm single  'Always The Same b/w Let Me In, which is also the seventh release on underground Sussex based label Market Square Records.

The Virginia based quartet featuring Kevin Longendyke - Guitar & Vocals,  Johnny Ward - Guitar & Vocals, Patty Conway - Drums &  Tim Abondello - Bass, together have a great way of putting their frustrations and angst onto a 45rpm groove and on this Market Square release you can hear it.

Top-Side 'Always The Same' kicks off with Patty Conway's primal drumming, her drum style has echoes of Miriam Linna about it, the group then launch into a three-chord tirade with Kevin singing  frustratingly about the boredoms of love, typical in the 60s garage-punk fashion this track is a 'girl done bad' type punker, the guitar solo in the break recalls The Keggs and overall the track has a Cramps meets Troggs feel.

The Flip  'Let Me In' sees The Ar-kaics enter more moodier climates, the track kicks in with reverb heavy guitars and in general has a real "bummed-out" feel to it, but this is where the genius lies, the track ebbs and flows for 4 minutes, yet the track is weirdly hypnotic, there is a real desperation in 'Let Me In'.  As the track builds with throbbing bass and tremolo feedback, Kevin wails in utter sadness "....But You Won't Let Me In?"  its confused and genius.

Market Square are proud and pleased to be releasing this 45 for The Ar-kaics, they're one of the few groups out there who are not sell-outs any genuine fans of rock n roll and punk rock, should invest in this 45 and also check out the bands other releases.

Talbot Adams - Green Girl b/w I Love You So MSR-06

Market Square Number six comes in the form of 'dream-laden' outsider pop by Mississippi based singer-songwriter Talbot Adams.

The Green Girl b/w I Love You So 45, features two great lo-fi indie-pop tracks from Talbot Adams, Talbot lives in Oxford, Mississippi however has had quite a chartered music career, he is a well-known name on the Memphis punk scene as well as being in bands such as The Black and Whites, The Royal Pendletons and KBD styled punkers  The Dutch Masters amongst others.... however this 45 - Talbot's third solo single under his own name. Green Girl b/w I Love You So, showcases some of Talbot's more gentler songs and Market Square are exceptionally proud and pleased to be working with Talbot Adams.

Green Girl, begins with a simple drum-pattern which recounts 60s girl groups like the Ronnettes, Talbot's vocal enters singing lyrics about lost-love, a meandering bass-line flows through the song, with acoustic jangle and a Moog synth glide effortlessly underneath, Green Girl is an understated pop-song, creating a great stoned-summer vibe.

I Love You So, the flip, is even more dreamy and chilled... pretty much picking-up where the A-side left off, this track is almost indie-pop and has a real trippy Paisley Underground feel yet at the same time, it sounds like a slow-motion doo-wop song, this is where Talbot is great, he writes songs which you can't quite work out, it sounds modern, it sounds old, all in all, that is a great skill which Talbot has as a songwriter, regardless of styles, these tracks are cool and the 45 as a whole, is a real nice listening experience.... As mentioned above, ideal for a stoned Indian summer gazing into the eyes of a loved one.

The Suburban Homes - The Suburban Home E.P MSR-05

The fifth 45rpm single on Market Square comes from the primordial cesspit which is Crawley, West Sussex UK

The Suburban Homes, sick to death with their lot in life, decided one day to record a few songs, they were so bored but it turned out to be a somewhat fun process and did indeed brake up the Monday to Friday existence they all hated, the songs were recorded in a few hours and  thus Market Square are proud to be releasing the angst-ridden neurosis which is The Suburban Home E.P.

The title track 'Suburban Home' kicks off  the proceedings with true snotty bombast, picking out all the faults with middle class living, age is of no concern for "The Homes", in this track, no-one is safe, they despise your kids, your grandparents and even your dog.

The flip-side, kicks off with Pseudo-Intellectuals, which was written after the boys had returned from a trip to London, London seemed an even more idiotic place than Crawley, so with that in mind, they picked up their guitars, played three chords and simply tell it as it is. 
The E.P is rounded off with the lacklustre theme for doing-it-yourself, the rather originally titled D.I.Y, sings the praises of  individual creativity  "its easier than 123, its easier than ABC " they yell, however, how many people are actually listening?? 

The Suburban Homes take DIY punk to its next original conclusion and thus have most likely created one of the truly last punk moments in UK music.

Michael Lynch - She's On Her Way b/w This Girl MSR-04

The fourth 45rpm single on Market Square comes from New York based Singer-Songwriter Michael Lynch who provides two great pop songs for this his debut 45 release.

Michael has been a mainstay on the New York gig circuit for a long time and has worked in various guises over the years, he has also appeared in many different groups whether just playing a number of instruments for others  or producing them, all in all, Michael Lynch is a super talented guy and I am proud to be releasing a 45 for him on Market Square.

The A-side 'She's On Her Way' is an early Beatles styled melodic pop tune, superbly catchy and real short clocking in at just over 1 minute 50 seconds, Lynch soars through chord progressions whilst the song ebbs and flows with rich sounding drum fills and neat vocal harmonies sung over even neater vocal melodies... this is one which could've come straight outta the Brill Building in 1965, the song also hints towards Sunshine Pop groups such as The Yellow Balloon and The Ohio Express, fans of that kinda 60s pop can't fail with this.

The B-side This Girl' is a fantastic song, written in a moody jangle pop style, the song is the perfect three minute pop song, a universal theme which we can all relate with sung with great emotion from Michael, 'This Girl' like the top-side, is complimented by great musicianship and harmonies, a fantastic song making this a great pop two-sider.
